Chapter 7
When I got home, all I could think about was Becca. My mom was in bed, Erin was doing homework, so I got online and looked for WhiskeyMind and updated her on everything.
Good luck, she typed. And just know, even if this doesnât work out, youâre still being true to who you are.
But I just knew it was going to work out. I used my writing skills to write Becca a note, not a love note really, but one telling her how she was a great friend and how much I appreciated her. I thought about more gifts I could buy her, and wondered about different activities we could do, hopefully with just the two of us.
The next day, before band started, I handed Becca my note and a bottle of her favorite perfume, Curve. My plans seemed to be working before she even read the note.
âDo you want to spend the night at my house after the football game Friday?â she asked.
âUh, yeah,â I said, feeling my face flushing.
âCool. Iâll talk to you more about it later.â
As she took her seat I smirked, and Jonah saw me.
âWhatâs up?â he asked with a grin.
I smiled back. âBig Gay Alâs Big Gay Percussion Section!â
Surprisingly, he looked confused, opened his mouth like he was about to say something, then just shook his head and walked off.
What was that all about?
I thought about it all through practice, then afterwards found Jonah as he was putting stuff in the percussion room.
âAre you okay?â I asked him.
He looked down on me, adjusted his glasses, then bit his lip.
âCan I tell you a secret?â he asked.
Immediately I shut the percussion room door.
âWhat is it?â
Jonah clasped his hands and started pacing. I followed him with my eyes until he finally stopped right in front of me and whispered.
âThe thing isâ¦I really am gay.â
I put a hand to my mouth. âJonah! Oh my God!â
He put a fist to his forehead. âAw, I knew I shouldnât have said anything.â
But I kept one hand to my mouth and with the other started pulling on Jonahâs shirtsleeve.
âThis is great!â
âIt is?â
âJonahâ¦Iâm gay, too!â
His mouth dropped. He took a step closer and bent down.
âAre you serious?â
I nodded, smiling bigger than Iâd ever smiled before.
âIâ¦Iâve never told anyone before,â he said, still looking a little nervous.
âMe neither!â
For a moment we just stood there looking at each other, and then finally Jonah smiled.
âSo, do you have a crush on anyone?â
I blushed. âYeah, but Iâm not telling you who. What about you?â
âYeah, but Iâm not telling you either.â
âAt least we know we donât have a crush on the same person.â
The bell rang, and we realized weâd been standing there way too long.
âIâll keep it a secret if you do,â I told him seriously, relief flooding my body that I had finally met someone like me.
He grinned. âDeal.â He held out a hand and I shook it, then together we chanted:
âBig Gay Alâs Big Gay Percussion Section!â
