Chapter 7

When I got home, all I could think about was Becca. My mom was in bed, Erin was doing homework, so I got online and looked for WhiskeyMind and updated her on everything.

Good luck, she typed. And just know, even if this doesn’t work out, you’re still being true to who you are.

But I just knew it was going to work out. I used my writing skills to write Becca a note, not a love note really, but one telling her how she was a great friend and how much I appreciated her. I thought about more gifts I could buy her, and wondered about different activities we could do, hopefully with just the two of us.

The next day, before band started, I handed Becca my note and a bottle of her favorite perfume, Curve. My plans seemed to be working before she even read the note.

“Do you want to spend the night at my house after the football game Friday?” she asked.

“Uh, yeah,” I said, feeling my face flushing.

“Cool. I’ll talk to you more about it later.”

As she took her seat I smirked, and Jonah saw me.

“What’s up?” he asked with a grin.

I smiled back. “Big Gay Al’s Big Gay Percussion Section!”

Surprisingly, he looked confused, opened his mouth like he was about to say something, then just shook his head and walked off.

What was that all about?

I thought about it all through practice, then afterwards found Jonah as he was putting stuff in the percussion room.

“Are you okay?” I asked him.

He looked down on me, adjusted his glasses, then bit his lip.

“Can I tell you a secret?” he asked.

Immediately I shut the percussion room door.

“What is it?”

Jonah clasped his hands and started pacing. I followed him with my eyes until he finally stopped right in front of me and whispered.

“The thing is…I really am gay.”

I put a hand to my mouth. “Jonah! Oh my God!”

He put a fist to his forehead. “Aw, I knew I shouldn’t have said anything.”

But I kept one hand to my mouth and with the other started pulling on Jonah’s shirtsleeve.

“This is great!”

“It is?”

“Jonah…I’m gay, too!”

His mouth dropped. He took a step closer and bent down.

“Are you serious?”

I nodded, smiling bigger than I’d ever smiled before.

“I…I’ve never told anyone before,” he said, still looking a little nervous.

“Me neither!”

For a moment we just stood there looking at each other, and then finally Jonah smiled.

“So, do you have a crush on anyone?”

I blushed. “Yeah, but I’m not telling you who. What about you?”

“Yeah, but I’m not telling you either.”

“At least we know we don’t have a crush on the same person.”

The bell rang, and we realized we’d been standing there way too long.

“I’ll keep it a secret if you do,” I told him seriously, relief flooding my body that I had finally met someone like me.

He grinned. “Deal.” He held out a hand and I shook it, then together we chanted:

“Big Gay Al’s Big Gay Percussion Section!”

* * * *

That Friday was the Homecoming football game.
